A compatible, healthy SD card is essential for reliable BlackVue dashcam operation. This guide helps you identify the cause of SD card errors and determine whether formatting is actually necessary.
⚠️ Warning: Formatting permanently erases all recordings and cannot be undone. Only format after confirming your model and ruling out other causes below.
Note: Screenshots in this guide are based on the BlackVue app and may vary slightly depending on your camera model or app.
SD card compatibility
Official BlackVue SD card recommendations
- Supported capacities (latest models):
- 64GB / 128GB / 256GB / 512GB microSD cards
- Recent X, LTE, and Plus series support up to 512GB
- S series and older models: up to 128GB or 256GB (see your model's manual for limits)
- Required specifications:
- Class 10 or U1/U3 (high endurance preferred for dashcam use)
- Use only microSD cards, not standard SD
| BlackVue model | Max SD card size | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| DR970X/DR770X/DR590X | 512GB | All X/Box/Plus/LTE |
| DR900X/DR750X/DR900S/DR750S | 256GB | |
| Older models | 128GB (typically) | Check user manual |
Tip: While some third-party endurance cards work, BlackVue recommends their own cards for best results and support. Using non-endurance or low-quality cards can cause performance issues such as random reboots or recording errors.
Interpreting SD card error messages
Common error prompts and solutions

Formatting your SD card
Before formatting — confirm your model and error type
Formatting procedures differ by model. If your model is unconfirmed, check the label on the dashcam body or the BlackVue app's camera info screen before proceeding.
Why formatting matters
- Formatting erases all data and restores file integrity.
- Regular formatting (every 2–4 weeks) prevents corruption and prolongs card life.
- Always back up important videos before formatting.
How to format your SD card
Using dashcam button (on previous models)
- With dashcam powered, press and hold the Wi-Fi/Format button (often marked) for around 10 seconds.
- Listen for a beep and confirmation sound.
- The card will be automatically formatted and ready for use.
Applicable Models:
- For DR590, DR590W, DR650GW, and DR650S: Press the Wi-Fi/Format button on the side of the dashcam for 10 seconds until the dashcam beeps.
- For DR750S, DR900S: Press the Wi-Fi/Format button for about five seconds and the camera will sound a voice prompt. Hold for another five seconds to format the SD card.
- For DR750-2CH LTE, DR770X, and DR970X: Press the Format button for about five seconds and the camera will sound a voice prompt. Hold for another five seconds to format the SD card.
Using BlackVue Viewer (Windows/Mac)
- Remove the microSD card from your dashcam.
- Insert it into your computer using a reader.
- Install and open BlackVue Viewer from the official site.
- Click the Format icon (or right-click drive > Format).
- Select FAT32 (Windows) or MS-DOS (FAT) (Mac) and allocation unit size as 64KB, if available.
- Confirm and wait for completion. Reinsert into dashcam.
Using the BlackVue App
- Tap on More (...) of the camera to reveal the submenu.
- Choose Format MicroSD Card, read the information on the pop up, and tap Format.
- Pair your smartphone with the dashcam by tapping Join.
- Wait for about ten seconds until the microSD card formatted successfully message pops up.
For SD cards over 64GB, use BlackVue Viewer to ensure they are formatted as FAT32, as some operating systems default to exFAT (not supported by all dashcams).
Formatting and maintenance tips
- Monthly formatting is recommended; every 2–4 weeks for heavy use.
- Use high-endurance cards designed for dashcams if choosing third-party brands.
- Replace SD cards at the first sign of errors, or every 1–2 years for busy vehicles.
- If you are using an SD card previously formatted by a different BlackVue model, reformat it using BlackVue Viewer before use.
Quick troubleshooting table
| Symptom | Format needed? | Recommended action |
|---|---|---|
| Repeating "Check SD card" warning | ✅ Yes, if persists | Format in BlackVue Viewer; replace if persists |
| SD card not recognized | ❌ Not yet | Try another card, clean contacts; format only if card is confirmed compatible |
| Video file missing/gaps | ✅ Yes | Format card; replace if problem recurs |
| Dashcam frequent reboots | ❌ Not first step | Try a known-good or official BlackVue card first |
Using the correct SD card, handling errors promptly, and regular formatting will keep your BlackVue dashcam running smoothly and help you avoid data loss or operational issues.
