Experiencing trouble connecting your phone to your BlackVue dashcam's Wi-Fi is common, but most issues can be solved with a few targeted steps. Follow this guide to quickly diagnose and resolve connection problems, as well as to find and fix your dashcam’s network name (SSID) and password.
Note: Screenshots in this guide are based on the BlackVue app and may vary slightly depending on your camera model or app.
Common Causes of Wi-Fi Connection Failure
- Entering an incorrect password (case sensitive or outdated)
- Using special characters in a changed camera Wi-Fi password
- Smartphones switching to mobile data/other Wi-Fi networks automatically
- Wi-Fi auto-on/off settings not configured correctly (on certain models)
- Dual-band Wi-Fi incompatibility (5GHz vs. 2.4GHz)
- Camera’s Wi-Fi is off, or device is not broadcasting SSID
Step-by-step troubleshooting
1. Verify Wi-Fi Is Enabled on the Camera
- Ensure your dashcam is powered on, and the Wi-Fi LED indicator is lit.
- On some older models, activate Wi-Fi by pressing the physical Wi-Fi button on the camera.
2. Find the Correct SSID (Network Name)
- The network (SSID) usually begins with your camera model (e.g., "BlackVue770X-XXXXXX").
- For most models, the default SSID and password are printed on a sticker attached to the camera (refer to the image below).
- If your camera isn’t showing in your phone’s Wi-Fi list, restart the camera and your phone, then try again.
3. Use the Correct Password
- Default password for many older models:
blackvue(all lowercase, no spaces). - For newer models: Use the unique password shown on the camera sticker (refer to the image below).
- Passwords are case sensitive—type them exactly as displayed.
Avoid special characters (!, ?, _, etc.). If you changed your password and included special symbols, reset or change it to use only letters and numbers.
4. Disable Wi-Fi Auto-Switch on Your Phone
- Android: Turn off “Smart Network Switch,” “Adaptive Connectivity,” or “Switch to Mobile Data” in your Wi-Fi settings.
- iPhone: Go to Settings > Cellular, then turn off “Wi-Fi Assist.”
- Staying within 10 meters (about 30 feet) of your dashcam improves connection reliability.
5. Adjust Camera Wi-Fi Settings (Where Applicable)
- For older models, verify “Wi-Fi Auto-turn On” is enabled if you want the camera to appear after every reboot:
- Turn off Cloud service in firmware settings, activate “Wi-Fi Auto-turn On,” then re-enable Cloud afterward.
6. Dual-Band Wi-Fi Compatibility
- Latest models may support both 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi.
- Some phones only detect 2.4GHz networks:
- Set the camera to 2.4GHz (Firmware Settings > Wi-Fi > Wi-Fi Band > 2.4GHz).
7. Recover or Reset Forgotten Password
- If you changed the Wi-Fi password and forgot it:
- Perform a Wi-Fi reset: Press and hold the Wi-Fi button for about 5 seconds until the camera announces a reset (see the manual for details).
- This resets the SSID and password to default (check your camera sticker).
Quick reference troubleshooting table
| Symptom | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Cannot find camera SSID | Wi-Fi off, not broadcasting, dual-band set to 5GHz | Turn Wi-Fi on, switch to 2.4GHz band, restart camera and phone |
| Password not accepted | Wrong/default/old password, special characters used | Check camera sticker or reset password, use letters/numbers only |
| Phone auto-switches to other network | Smart Network Switch/Wi-Fi Assist enabled | Disable auto-switch in phone Wi-Fi/cellular settings |
| Connected but “No internet” warning | Normal for direct Wi-Fi camera with no internet access | Ignore warning for direct dashcam connections |
| Wi-Fi disconnects after 10 minutes | “Wi-Fi Auto-turn Off” is enabled | Disable auto-turn off in camera Wi-Fi settings |
| Still unable to connect | Faulty SD card, firmware corruption, hardware issue | Format/reload firmware, try another SD card; if persists, service |
Tips and best practices
- Always use the latest camera firmware and mobile app version for robust connectivity.
- If connecting at a public place or large parking lot, be mindful of Wi-Fi interference.
- Back up the default SSID and password (take a photo of the camera sticker) before installation.
- After multiple failed attempts, restart both the dashcam and mobile device.
